Division: Single A League
Age: 9 year olds Division Coordinator: Steve White Fields Generally Used: Games are played at Meadowlark Field, and Remington Jefferson Field. Number of Games: Varies based on the number of teams in the league. Duration of Season: April through June including holiday weekends; generally weeknights and weekends How Teams are selected: Single A is a draft division. Coaches from the prior year will have rated the players so as to allow for team balance. Basic Skill Focus/expectations: Continue with the introduction to the game while focusing on more intricate situational infield plays (i.e. 1st and 3rd, bases loaded, 2nd and 3rd with less than two outs, 2nd and 3rd with two outs, etc.). Continued emphasis on outfield plays, similar to those taught in the Bantam League. Catchers will be taught how to block the ball and to accept the ball coming home in front of the plate. Pitching will receive a larger amount of attention and instruction. Coaches are encouraged to provide the chance to pitch to any player who asks for it. Difference from Bantam: There is a draft and players are chosen based on skill ratings from the previous season. At this level, special requests are difficult to balance. This is the first full season of kids pitching to each other. Games are umpired by FYBO players from either the Pony or Babe Ruth League. There is a playoff at this level to determine the town champ and all teams are included. Important Rules: Base Running / Run Scoring: Stealing is not allowed for the first half of the season. Stealing will be allowed the second half of the season as follows: a team can steal one base per inning and the runner may only advance one base on a steal. Runners are not permitted to steal home and no double steals are allowed. Runners may not leave their base until the ball crosses the plate. Runners must slide to avoid contact. Head first slides allowed only while returning to a base. Pitching: The strike zone is arm pits to knees. Curve balls are not allowed. A pitcher may pitch no more than three innings in a game and five innings in a week. One pitch constitutes a full inning. The pitching week begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday. A pitcher must have one full days rest between appearances. If a pitcher hits the batter three times in any inning, the pitcher must be removed. Playing Time / Positions Played: All games are six innings in length. Extra innings are only allowed in the playoffs. An inning ends after three outs have been charged or four runs are scored. This does not apply in the last inning of the game. Ten defensive positions are played, with four outfielders. Every player on the team must play a minimum of four innings in the field each game. Managers are required to rotate players to ensure that they play at least two innings in the infield each game. Free substitutions are allowed during all games. |
